Archangelos

This attractive village is located south of Rhodes City, on the eastern coast of the island. The narrow streets of the village, its picturesque houses and squares and the kindness... of its friendly inhabitants, charm every visitor.
Despite the fact that this village is one of the biggest in Rhodes and has a population of 6000 people, the inhabitants of Archangelos preserve their local customs and traditions; bread is still baked in the traditional wood-fired oven, which every house has in its courtyard, the wedding ceremonies are still held according to the traditional way and the idiom of the village is still spoken by many of the inhabitants.
The traditional pottery and carpet-making art, is still practiced by some of the inhabitants as well as the confection of high leather boots which many of them are wearing.
The Church of the Archangel Michael dominates the village and has a fine 19th c. campanile, as well as the Church of Saint John which houses beautiful frescoes that date back to the 14th c., are really worth seeing. Some of the village streets are particularly picturesque, due to the traditional houses standing on each side and filling them. These beautiful houses are painted with vivid colors and have arches and walls, beautifully decorated with ceramic plates, from the village of Lindos.
The castle of Saint John, built by the Knights, is standing on the top of a hill, at 10-20 minutes’ walk from the village.

Afantou

Yet another of the largest villages of Rhodes, surrounded by verdant hills, lying south of the island’s capital, its name Afantou, is believed to have originated from the word afantos,... meaning invisible in Greek, due to the fact that it was built out of sight from the sea, in order to remain unnoticed by the pirates who visited this lovely place.

The Church of Our Lady Katholiki ( Catholic ) is also worth visiting, while in the village, for the beautiful 17th and 18th c. frescoes that it hosts.
The square, which can be found at the heart of the village, is surrounded by cafes and bars. A good selection of taverns, restaurants and shops is also available. Various accommodations of all categories can be found in Afantou, as well as a golf course. The village is also the center of Rhodes for carpet making, and lots of shops offer the possibility to buy one of these fine, high – quality carpets.

The reason for Afantou’s popularity is the fact that it is located only 1 km from the beach of the same name, which is a pure marvel, combining sand and pebbles along with crystalline waters; this long beach, spreading for over 4 km, has been awarded by the EU Blue Flag for its cleanliness.

Apolakia

The quiet village near Lindos and between the villages Genadi and Vati, 92km from the capital of Rhodes, seems to have been built in a pit, from which it has... taken its name. In the village square, stands the Old Italian building, a typical example of Italian architecture, one of the most beautiful in the village.
Small traditional houses with tiled roofs, old windmills and quiet monasteries, are some of the greatest features of Apolakia. The magic of this place comes from the wonderful Lake of Apolakia where people can swim in the blue waters and relax under the shady trees. Next to the lake is the small Byzantine temple of Agios Georgios, built in 1290 with a superb view to the beach.
The village is surrounded by the natural environment of olive trees and the extended cultivations, consisted of rich flora and fauna. The village roads are ideal for hiking, especially the road towards Arnitha and Mesanagros or the Monastery of Skiadeni. The beach near Apolakia is amazingly beautiful and of important biotope. Other beaches nearby Apolakia are Limni, Fourni and Kouloura. In Apolakia, there is a great variety of taverns where the visitors can enjoy fresh seafood.

Asklipio

Located 64 km southeast of Rhodes capital, this lovely mountainous village is built amphitheatrically and stands out for its unique natural surroundings. The most important feature of Asklipio is the... Medieval Castle, which was built by the knights of Saint John, in the13th c.. The white mass of the small traditional houses, is a typical example of the folklore architecture.
At the center of the village stands the lovely church of Virgin Mary, built in 1060 A.D and right next to it is the old olive press, whereas today it has been operating as a Folklore Museum. During the month of August, the village organizes two important festivities, celebrating the Metamorphosis of Sotiros and the Annunciation of Virgin Mary. The village has several types of accommodation from luxury villas to low-cost apartments.

This picturesque village is the highest village of Rhodes, south of the capital, at an altitude of 850 m.. Its high location has kept it completely unspoiled and untouched by... modern civilization and tourism; some of its inhabitants still wear local costumes and are all keeping the local customs and tradition, passing them to the younger generations.
Fine multicolored embroideries are made in Embonas and are part of the local traditions. Almost all the village houses, are fine examples of the traditional architecture of Rhodes and are well-maintained. A few rooms for rent can be found in the picturesque Embonas, as well as traditional cafes and taverns serving some mouth-watering specialties.

This resort used to be a quiet little fishing village, a few km south of Rhodes City, now being turned into the major tourist resort of the island. The village of Ialysos is actually the third largest settlement in the island, with approximately 7,000 inhabitants. Is located 8 km to the north-west direction from the town of Rhodes... and close to the ruins of the ancient city of the same name, also known as Trianta, which constitutes an important archaeological site.
During the last decades, the village has become a popular tourist destination, with a good variety of hotels, apartments, studios and campsites, placed along the coast. With several traditional restaurants, as well as an active nightlife in various bars and clubs, the village gets particularly busy during the summer when the European Windsurfing Championship is also held at the beach of Ialyssos.

The traditional village of Kalithies is located 13 km south of Rhodes Town and 2 km from the cosmopolitan resort of Faliraki. The architecture of Kalithies distinguishes for the narrow... paved streets and the stone houses, while its position offers a great view to the bay of Kallithea.
There are monasteries to visit close to Kalithies, such as the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savor with a 16th c. iconostasis and the Monastery of Virgin Eleoussa with two medieval coat of arms. Near Kalithies, there is also the Cave of Kalamonias with its impressive stalactites and human traces from the Neolithic Era (5.000-3.700 BC)
If you visit Kalithies on the 13th – 14th of September, you can witness the festival of the Holy Cross, one of the most impressive festivals in Rhodes.

A well-preserved settlement, located in the middle of a fertile plain, on the southern end of the island, about 84 km from Rhodes city, this charming traditional village was built... during the medieval times, just like every village in Rhodes, still retaining its traditional character, consisted of houses of typical folklore architecture, depicting the way of life during the years.
A tour around the village will help the visitor to travel through time and explore the culture of Rhodes. Kattavia is surrounded by hills and every season of the year, the colors alternate according to the climate. The visitors have various hiking options, since there are numerous paths and rural roads in many directions. Kattavia is also a place of archaeological interest, with the temple of Agia Paraskevi and the church of Virgin Mary, built in the 8th c., while 8 km further, one will find the extraordinary beaches of Prassonisi, otherwise known as the “Windsurfing Mecca”.

Between Rhodes and Faliraki you will find the picturesque village of Koskinou, located at 6 kilometres from the city of the island. Koskinou consists of 2 parts: The old village... and the newer coastal area.
The modern side of Koskinou is considered one of the most popular destinations for family holidays in Rhodes. It is well known for its narrow streets, the churches and the numerous traditional old houses, decorated with the Rhodian style. It has numerous cafes and taverns where you can enjoy delicious food, of both Greek and international cuisine, as well as good wine. However, the place will astonish you once you enter the labyrinth with the countless paths, leading you to the old, traditional part of Koskinou.
Consisted of beautiful cobbled streets and whitewashed squares filled with colorful flowers, it is worth visiting the famous Traditional House, decorated with handmade wefts and ceramic figs. Koskinou has a great archaeological interest and rich history since the 4th c. AD, as well as the 13th c. medieval castle and the chapels, built in the 4th c., which are worth visiting.

One of the most beautiful villages in Rhodes, located 55 km from the town, is built in barrow, with a great panoramic view to the sea and has... a population of 500 people.
Over the years, the village has become a place of touristic interest due to the Medieval castle of the Knights of Rhodes and the church of Agios Ioannis, with its magnificent wall paintings, dating back to 16th c.
At the center of the village, many traditional cafes ( kafenia ) and taverns, offer the best view to the visitors.

Skala Kamirou is located at a short distance from here, offering quite interesting sights to see.

This small traditional village is located at the center of the island, about 58 km southwest of the town. It is built on the slopes of a hill and has... numerous well preserved old houses, many of which have accentuated their beauty. Visitors can find accommodations in the neighboring tourist resorts of Lindos, while there are numerous taverns and restaurants serving delicious food.
At a short distance, of about 4 km southwest is a Byzantine Monastery, built amidst impressive greenery surrounding, with great hagiographies, dating back to 17th c.. The village is accessible through the wonderful Lardos – Lindos route of Lardos.

Located 35 km south of Rhodes town, the village can easily be accessed through the Rhodes-Lindos highway. It is surrounded by lush green vegetation and beautiful mountainous landscape. Walking around... the village, visitors see the simplicity and the natural beauty of the olive tree groves and the surrounding landscape.
This place is not known for its tourist development or its activity, rather than for the serenity and peacefulness it offers the visitors, as well as the religious sites, including the church of Saint John and the Monastery of Kamiri, from the Byzantine era. The festival, celebrating the Metamoprhosis of Sotiros (the Saviour), on August 6th, is an interesting event for the locals of Massari village.

The village of Monolithos lies 73 km south west of Rhodes town, amidst lush hills and olive tree groves. Visitors have to walk for a couple of km in order... to reach the beautiful 15th c. Venetian castle, built by the Knights, on top of a rock.
Stone built houses and picturesque alleys, compose the charming atmosphere of Monolithos. The view from the fortress is absolutely breathtaking, while inside there is a lovely single-aisle church dedicated to Saint Panteleimon.
The picturesque cove at Fourni, surrounded by pine-trees, golden sands and caves, creates a magical scenery. From Monolithos you can also reach the beautiful villages of Siana, Apolakia and the Monastery of Skiadi.

One of the most attractive and charming villages of Rhodes, located 16 km west of the capital, got its name from the beautiful surroundings of exotic gardens that Arabs once... brought to the village. This is a true paradise, just as its name indicates.
This village has 2,500 inhabitants but during the summer months, it gets quite crowded due to the fact that the airport is only a couple of km away. The nearby beach is a developed tourist settlement with numerous local shops, traditional houses and several renovated buildings.
Despite the fact that today Paradisi constitutes a popular tourist destination, the locals have preserved their sociable and friendly character. The area has various options for accommodation, food, shopping and any other kind of entertainment. Most of the people visit Paradisi for the sandy and organized beach, stretching for 10 km, from Kremasti to Theologos. From Rhodes city, accessing the village is quite easy, due to taxis, as well as public buses, which run frequently.

Salakos reveals a special archaeological interest as well, surrounded by ruins and traces from the Hellenistic period and a few churches from the Byzantine era.
Near the edge of the village, can be found the cave of Makarouna, which is easily accessible, while in the coastal side, there are ruins of three cities of Ancient Rhodes. Salakos combines a mountainous and a coastal beauty that is worth exploring.

The beautiful mountain settlement of Siana is located 65 km south of Rhodes town and it is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Acramitis, the second-highest mountain of the... island, offering a breathtaking view to the surrounding areas. Locals have preserved the traditional layout and their customs.
The village is well known for the local products like honey, which is served on top of ice creams or Greek yoghurt, combined with fruits and nuts. Their local wine is famous for its strong taste, which can be found only in the traditional cafes, along with some local delicacies.
One of Siana’s two churches, Saint Panteleimon, a 19th c. structure, is dominating the center of the village. The streets are full of tourist shops, where a plethora of local products, can be purchased, from clothes to jewelry and carpets, to wine and desserts.

Skala Kamirou

A small port, 50 km west of Rhodes town, actually laying on the bottom of Kritinia village serving as a safe shelter for fishing boats. During summer, excursion boats... depart for the nearby island of Halki (1 hour trip) or the deserted islet of Alinda (30 min trip), with numerous beaches to swim.
Delicious taverns dot the waterfront of Skala Kamirou, serving fresh fish and other traditional Rhodian delicacies. Next to the port, there is a beach with small pebbles and clean water, ideal if you want to stay away from the busy crowds. Few rooms to rent can also be found in the region.
Near Skala, remains of Ancient Kamiros, one of the most powerful towns of Rhodes during the antiquity, can be found. The town was lived in the Prehistoric times and was destroyed twice by earthquake, in the 2nd and the 1st c. BC. Excavations started in the early 20th c. and continue to this day, even though the site is open to the public.

A charming village, located 22 km south of Rhodes town, a modern tourist resort with 3.000 abiding inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in tourism.
The paves, passing through the... center of the village, lead to old buildings and the traditional whitewashed houses, while the locals preserve an openhearted and friendly mood that matching their simple way of life. Theologos is known as the Valley of the Butterflies, a magnificent area situated 8 km south of the tourist settlement.
The surrounding region is full of amazing sights, including the famous Monastery of Kalopetra and the white chapel of Agios Soulas. The homonymous beach offers many facilities for water sports and is the ideal spot for eager windsurfers.
